For more leisurely days out, Ravenglass, 4 miles north, is a coastal hamlet within the Lake District National Park and home to the narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. Nearby Muncaster Castle has gorgeous gardens plus the Hawk and Owl Centre where you can watch awe-inspiring flying displays.
